What is Tinnitus? First
off, what is Tinnitus? Tinnitus is the medical term given to the condition of
having ringing in ears, or ears that are filled with static noise. This is the
most common symptom of the disease called tinnitus. The condition itself is
usually described as a ringing, hissing, buzzing, popping, clicking, humming,
or other sound that affects the hearing ability of individuals who have it. It
can also affect some aspects of an individual's sleep pattern, making them fall
asleep and not realize what is happening.
So what is tinnitus?
Basically, tinnitus is the perception of sound in either the ears or head that
is not from an outside source. There are a variety of different types of
tinnitus symptoms. Common descriptions are that sometimes it is just a hissing,
buzz, hissing, ringing, whistling, or other intermittent sound that only occurs
during certain times of the day or night. Other times, it could be very brief
segments of normal sound. Some individuals experience pulsatile tinnitus, which
is the most common type of tinnitus that is characterized by a pulsing noise
that can occur in either one or both ears.
Tinnitus can affect
anyone, at any age. Some people may get it while they are still in their
twenties. Many people notice the sounds of tinnitus while they are sleeping;
however, these sounds do not actually cause the ringing in the ears that most
individuals hear when their tinnitus symptoms begin to manifest themselves. The
sounds of tinnitus that some individuals notice are normally associated with
hearing loss. This is because individuals who suffer from tinnitus also
commonly experience hearing loss as well.
If you have been
diagnosed with tinnitus, there are treatments available for you. One treatment
option that many doctors suggest their patients use is to use what is called
sound therapy. Sound therapy is designed to help reduce the volume of the
sounds that produce the ringing in the ear. It is important to understand that
using what is called sound therapy should be done under the supervision of a
medical professional to ensure that the volume is set correctly and to prevent
injury to the brain.
For some individuals, what is tinnitus becomes an afterthought when they have their hearing checked.
This is because for many people, there is nothing medically wrong with their
hearing. However, their tinnitus only becomes noticeable when they try to
multi-task or perform other activities that require full concentration. This is
why many people will purchase a hearing aid especially if what is tinnitus has
become an issue for them. A hearing aid is used to amplify what is heard and
can help make the ringing much less noticeable. With a hearing aid, many people
have managed to rid themselves of the sounds that once bothered them so much.
If you have what is
tinnitus, you may also have a problem with attention or focus. Many times, what
is tinnitus will be experienced by someone trying to pay attention to a game or
another task that requires concentration. When these sounds bother the person,
it does not help them concentrate and they may begin to lose focus and even be
distracted. This can lead to poor grades, missing school, losing job
opportunities and much more. To avoid having this happen to you, be sure that
you do your best to rid yourself of the noise that is bothering you. There are
ways to do that and some of those ways are to purchase a noise masker or buy
ear plugs to wear while you listen to music so that the noise is masked out.
